If you're searching for an eco-tourism destination in Central Java that offers untouched nature, wildlife encounters, and authentic cultural experiences, Petungkriyono is a hidden gem worth exploring. In July 2025, we embarked on a three-day sustainable travel adventure deep in the highlands of Pekalongan, and the experience left a lasting impression.

Arriving in Petungkriyono & Exploring Black Canyon

Our journey began in Yogyakarta and continued to Pasar Doro, where we transferred to the iconic local transport known as the doplak—a modified open-back pickup used by villagers in Petungkriyono. Riding through the refreshing mountain breeze set the perfect tone for the adventure.

Our first stop was Black Canyon, once known as Kedung Sipingit. Once considered mystical, it has now become one of Petungkriyono’s most scenic natural attractions. After lunch and a refreshing dip in the cold mountain water, we headed to Curug Bajing, a stunning 75-foot waterfall and our campsite for the night. We enjoyed a village-style dinner and camped under the stars.

Ramban Rimba Trekking, Gula Aren Making & Gamelan Night

The second day introduced us to Petungkriyono’s rich biodiversity through the Ramban Rimba trekking experience. We began by planting wild edible plants (WEPs) and learning how to identify and forage them—ingredients that later became our lunch.

The trekking route took us through peaceful pine forests, shaded coffee plantations, and finally to Kali Karang River, where we cooled off in its fresh, icy water. In the afternoon, we checked in at a local homestay in Tlogopakis Village.

Later, we joined local farmers to experience the traditional process of making gula aren, from collecting fresh sap in the forest to simmering it slowly over firewood.

As night fell, we immersed ourselves even deeper into village culture by learning and playing gamelan together with the locals—a heartwarming, communal experience that made the day feel truly complete.

Wildlife Watching in Petungkriyono

Petungkriyono is known as one of Java’s best forest ecosystems, home to many protected species. At dawn, we joined a wildlife-watching trek to search for:

-Javan gibbon (Owa Jawa)

-Javan langur

-Long-tailed macaque

-Javan hawk-eagle

-The elusive Javan leopard

Silence was essential during the trek to avoid disturbing the wildlife. Although the Javan leopard remained unseen, observing other species in their natural habitat was a highlight of the tour.

Why Petungkriyono Is a Must-Visit Eco-Tourism Destination

What makes this tour truly special is the harmonious relationship between the local community and their environment. Life here remains lush, authentic, and sustainably protected. Staying with locals, breathing fresh mountain air, and learning about their traditions—from foraging to gamelan—offered a meaningful reminder of the beauty of simplicity and responsible travel.

If you’re looking for a journey that connects nature, culture, and sustainability, Petungkriyono offers one of the best eco-tourism experiences in Indonesia.
